The LAWCF has been featured in several social media outlets. The foundation was also featured on WBRC Fox 6 News of Birmingham and Central Alabama. The highlight of this feature was the LAWCF partnered with the Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEARUP). GEARUP is a competitive grant that was awarded by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE) to high-risk communities for the development of comprehensive, research-driven programs to prepare low-income, minority, and first-generation students for higher education to enter and succeed in postsecondary education.
The LAWCF began their work with GEARUP Birmingham focusing on mentoring to select male youth within the cohort from George Washington Carver and Wenonah High Schools. Since that time, the LAWCF has expanded their partnership with GEARUP servicing three middle schools and 11 high schools. Mentees address topics such as: community relations, conflict resolution with peers & law enforcement, financial literacy, leadership, and several other topics centered on professional development. This partnership aims to strengthen the mentees involved so that they will become positive contributors in today’s society.
